FROM ADDICTION & ABUSE TO REDEMPTION

A Life in Crisis, A Heart Still Searching

Carolyn arrived in Omaha in 2023 with nothing but her suitcase and a desire for change. After years of battling substance abuse, surviving domestic violence, and navigating homelessness in South Carolina and Texas, she knew she needed a fresh start—but it wouldn’t come easily.

She carried deep wounds from a church that once judged her harshly, leading her to walk away from faith for nearly a decade. “I blamed God for what people did,” Carolyn shared. “And that kept me stuck for years.”

But the moment she stepped into the Lydia House at Open Door Mission, things began to shift. She enrolled in the New Life Recovery Program, began seeing a therapist, and started the difficult but beautiful work of healing.

The Transportation Barrier That Held Her Back

As Carolyn rebuilt her life, found employment, and reconnected with her faith, one major obstacle remained: no transportation. Without a car, even simple tasks like getting to work, attending church, or buying groceries became overwhelming.

“Relying on Uber and Lyft was expensive. And Omaha’s public transportation system just isn’t reliable enough for what I needed,” she explained. “I didn’t know how I’d ever afford a car again.”

That’s where Chariots4Hope stepped in.

The Power of Community and a Car

Thanks to generous supporters like Citylight Church Midtown and Anchor Roofing & Landscaping, Carolyn’s prayers were answered in the most unexpected way. She was surprised with a vehicle—and a crowd of people cheering her on.

“I walked outside and saw a group of strangers shouting ‘surprise,’” she said through tears on our Under the Hood podcast. “They didn’t see my addiction. They didn’t see my past. They just saw me—in the now.”

Through our First Wheels Program, Carolyn received a dependable car and the dignity of vehicle ownership. But more than that, she received a tangible reminder that her pain has purpose, and she’s not walking alone anymore.

Driving Toward a Purpose-Filled Future

Today, Carolyn is thriving. She’s employed, active in her church, and supporting others on the road to recovery. She’s learning car maintenance basics and dreaming about launching her own nonprofit one day. “I used to live in fear and analysis paralysis,” she said. “Now I trust that God has already prepared the way.”

Her journey reminds us why Chariots4Hope exists: to remove transportation barriers and offer the kind of love that sees people where they are—and believes in where they’re going.
