Shayla’s story is one of the most powerful examples of how a single car donation can change the trajectory of an entire family.

Starting Over After Losing Everything

Shayla spent the majority of her life in Houston, Texas. She was raising her daughter, building stability, and doing everything she could to move forward in life. But when Hurricane Harvey hit in 2017, everything was swept away in a moment.

Her home was destroyed.
Her belongings were gone.
And she and her daughter suddenly found themselves living in emergency shelters while trying to rebuild.

The storm forced her into a season of starting over from scratch. And that road eventually led her back to Omaha — the city where she was born but barely remembered — to begin again with nothing in her hands except determination, faith, and the love she had for her daughter.

Rebuilding in Omaha Without Transportation

Once in Omaha, Shayla found temporary shelter, started attending church, and even began volunteering at a local mission — all without a car.
She walked.
She biked.
She waited on buses that didn’t always come.
She spent too much money on Ubers just to get to work or church.

Yet she continued serving her community, encouraging others, and pouring out kindness even while she herself was struggling.

Transportation wasn’t just a convenience she lacked — it was a barrier holding her back from stability, opportunity, and safety.

This is the real weight many families carry before receiving a donated car.

The Moment a Car Donation Changed Everything

Through a community resource center, Shayla learned about Chariots4Hope. She joined workshops, built relationships, and became part of the Chariots family. Even when COVID hit shortly after, she stayed committed — attending classes, staying connected, and waiting with hope.

Then came the surprise.

One afternoon, Shayla thought she was simply meeting for lunch. Instead, she walked outside to see a donated vehicle waiting for her — surrounded by tears, celebration, and the overwhelming love of the team and donors who made it possible.

“It was love. It was genuine. It was heartfelt. I’ll never forget that moment,” she said.

Staying Connected: Beyond the Car

One of the unique parts of Chariots4Hope is that the relationship doesn’t end at the moment someone receives a donated car.

Shayla became a faithful volunteer, a friend, a sister, and an encourager within the Chariots community. She and her daughter participate in Beyond the Car events, and she continues pouring into others the same way others poured into her.

“It feels like family,” she says. “It completes something in me.”

Her story shows that car donations don’t just change circumstances — they create community.

From Recipient to Independent Car Owner

After years of caring for her donated vehicle, Shayla reached another huge milestone: she was financially ready to purchase her own car.

In 2025, she bought her first vehicle — a 2024 GMC — completely on her own.

This is the long-term impact we pray for. This is the power of stability. This is the result of donors helping break transportation barriers.

“You thought about me enough to give me a car,” she said. “I wanted you to know that your investment worked.”
